Colorado Springs, Colorado - Raton, New Mexico - Amarillo, Texas - Boise City, Oklahoma - Colorado Springs, ColoradoFirst Stop: Raton, New MexicoSecond Stop: Capulin Volcano, New MexicoNew Mexico is home to an extinct cinder cone volcano, and since I always somehow find myself around volcanoes, we took the winding drive up the summit. The volcano last erupted around 56,000 years ago. There are lots of great hiking trails. Third Stop: Amarillo, TexasFourth Stop: Palo Duro Canyon, TexasFifth Stop: Boise City, OklahomaThe tiny town of Boise City, Oklahoma has the unique distinction of being the only town in the continental US that was bombed during World War II. The small town was bombed in a training error, when the courtyard was mistaken for the practice range. An oil tanker was in town and drove off when the bombing began, narrowly escaping a bomb.
